October's best live music events in Melbourne’s eastern suburbs

From a group of about 40 women singing in a barbershop quartet style to vocalists paying tribute to two iconic Austrian composers, here are some of the gigs across Melbourne’s eastern suburbs in October.

Live at the Library - Jamilah Lee & Elowyn

On the first Friday of each month, Live at the Library is a gig delivered in partnership with Defrosted Events - an initiative led by Yarra Ranges locals aged 14 to 25.

The monthly performances showcase young musicians from the Dandenongs and Yarra Ranges.

This month’s featured artists include folk musician Jamilah Lee and pianist and singer-songwriter Elowyn.

When: Friday October 3, 6-7pm

Where: Belgrave Library, Reynolds Lane, Belgrave

Cost: Free

Waltzing Through Vienna

The Robert Stolz Viennese Music Society Inc (RSVMSI) launched in 1984, and honours the work of Viennese operetta composer Robert Stolz (1880-1975).

As part of the Victorian Seniors Festival, the society is hosting Waltzing Through Vienna, a concert featuring soprano Heulen Cynfal, tenor Christopher Busietta, baritone Ian Lowe and pianist Phillipa Safey.

​The concert is also paying tribute to Austrian composer Johann Strauss II, as this year marks the 200th anniversary of his birth in Vienna.

Afternoon tea included.

Cost: $25 full price, $20 for RSVMSI members and seniors

Suzette Herft

Melbourne musician Suzette Herft is inspired by ‘90s folk, and has played at events including the Port Fairy Folk Festival and the National Folk Festival.

Supports for her gig at the Victorian Folk Music Club (VFMC) are Bill Jeffrey and John Tippett.

When: Tuesday October 14, 7.45-10pm

Cost: $15 entry, $11 VFMC members

The Basin Music Festival fundraiser

Featuring three-piece retro rock group Standing Room Only and cover band Wingin’ It, with all proceeds going towards running costs for next year’s The Basin Music Festival, which is scheduled for March 20-22.

When: Saturday October 18, 7-11.30pm

Where: The Acorn Bar & Restaurant, 375 Forest Road, The Basin

World Singing Day - Vocal Vibes

Vocal Vibes is an ensemble of about 40 local female singers that rehearses weekly in Ringwood.

Ranging across a variety of musical styles including jazz standards, 21st century pop, barbershop and show tunes, the group always sings a capella.

The concert is part of World Singing Day, which encourages people all over the world to gather in groups to sing.

When: Saturday October 18, 3.30-5pm

Where: Mullum Mullum Anglican Church (St Paul's), 40 Warrandyte Road, Ringwood

Cost: Adult $20, children $10, children five and under free

Felicity Urquhart and Josh Cunningham

In between tour dates as The Waifs’ lead guitarist, Josh Cunningham is partnering up with Australian country music singer-songwriter Felicity Urquhart for a joint tour across the country, with Upwey’s Burrinja Cultural Centre in the middle of their trip.

Warrnambool folk musician Flynn Gurry is the support act. 

When: Thursday October 30, doors open 7.30pm, support act 8pm, main act 8.45pm to 11pm
