July’s live music events in Melbourne’s eastern suburbs

Sisters singing soul, one of the country’s most prolific bands and a country music legend are among the headliners this month.

From a selection of Dandenong Ranges’ up-and-coming artists to a celebration of French music and culture, here are some of the gigs to check out across Melbourne’s eastern suburbs in July.

While You’re Young

The lineup on this one-day showcase of young local bands and artists includes singer-songwriter John Yanko, rock and pop artist Hannah Underwood, Belgrave-based alternative rock outfit Chasing Planes and pop-punk group Motion Blur.

Vika and Linda

Sisters Vika and Linda Bull started out as backup singers in The Black Sorrows, and have since released nine studio albums after becoming a blues and soul duo in 1994.

Monash Musique

Celebrating the week-long Bastille Day French Festival, this one-night-only performance will involve a performance from Parisian Can Can Dancers and an interactive French folk dancing workshop.

Melbourne-based band La Mauvaise Réputation will play a range of 1930s Parisian jazz and gypsy swing throughout the evening.

Beccy Cole

Since first jumping on stage at the age of 14 in her mother’s band Beccy Cole has won 11 Golden Guitars.

Lior

Joined by a string quartet, Melbourne-based singer-songwriter Lior will be playing reimagined versions of some of his biggest hits, including Daniel and This Old Love, as well as selections from his orchestral collaborations with renowned composer Nigel Westlake.

Lido Jazz Room

Inspired by the Manhattan jazz bars that popped up in the 1980s, the Lido Jazz Room hosts local and international performers.

The lineup in July includes jazz pianist Bob Sedergreen on Saturday July 4 and Saturday June 25.

When: Every Friday and Saturday, 8-10pm

Joe Camilleri and The Black Sorrows

Forming in 1983, The Black Sorrows has released 20 studio albums and toured internationally over the past 43 years.

The band’s hits include Chained to the Wheel, Harley + Rose, Hold On To Me and The Chosen One.

Bodyjar

More than 25 years after Bodyjar released the breakthrough LP How It Works, the pop-punk quartet celebrates the album’s hits on an Australian tour.

Lido Jazz Room

Inspired by the Manhattan jazz bars that popped up in the 1980s, the intimate Lido Jazz Room hosts local and international performers.

The lineup in June includes Australian actress and singer Jane Clifton on Saturday June 13 and jazz pianist Bob Sedergreen on Saturday June 20.

When: Every Friday and Saturday, 8-10pm

The Wolfe Brothers

Brothers Tom and Nick Wolfe rose to prominence in the 2012 season of Australia’s Got Talent, finishing in second place.

The pair are on the road playing songs from their latest album Australian Made.

Silvie Paladino

Melbourne-born soprano Silvie Paladino (Young Talent Time, Les Misérables) has been singing since she was nine.

When: Tuesday June 23, 10.30-11.45am and 1.30-2.45pm

Phil Jamieson

The Grinspoon frontman is set to release his second solo album, 10Charlie, on August 14.

As part of a tour across the country, he will be playing songs off the new LP and classic Grinspoon tunes like Chemical Heart.

Kew Court House Live

Built in 1888, the Kew Court House venue has an 80-seat capacity, with June performances including Jude Perl on Saturday June 13 and Tamara Kuldin on Friday June 26.

X formed nearly 50 years ago in Australia, and founding singer Steve Lucas keeps the flame alive today.

Jenny Talia

Australian-born comedy musician Tammy-Jo Bryant is the daughter of Australian comedian Dennis Bryant, also known as “Kevin Bloody Wilson”.

Now based in the United States and coming off a career as a country music artist – performing under the stage name T. J. Dennis – she translates her father’s crude humour to a female perspective via the alter ego of “Jenny Talia”.

Ruthie Foster

With a career spanning back to 1997 and hailing from Texas, Grammy-nominated blues and folk singer-songwriter Ruthie Foster will be sharing stories from her musical journey while taking audiences through her hits and deeper cuts.

Kris Mizzi

Named one of the recipients of the Solo Artist of the Year award at the 2021 Australian Folk Music Awards, Kris Mizzi blends precise fingerpicking on his guitar with a gentle vocal style.

Steve Kilbey

One of the founding members of Australian rock band The Church – still touring and recording new material after first forming in 1980 – frontman and multi-instrumentalist Steve Kilbey has a significant solo catalogue of his own.

Rogue Traders

If you turned on the radio in 2005, Rogue Traders’ hits like “Voodoo Child”, “Way to Go!” and “Watching You” were inescapable.

The pop rock outfit, led by former Neighbours actress and TV personality Natalie Bassingthwaite, are celebrating the 21st anniversary of their breakout album Here Come the Drums alongside tracks off their upcoming album.

False Morels

Indie rock outfit False Morels will be playing their first-ever show at Sooki Lounge later this month, with experimental synth-funk-punk project Electric Self as the support act.

The Choirboys

First founded in 1978, pub rock group The Choirboys still include founding frontman Mark Gable and bassist Ian Hulme, with lead guitarist Brett Williams joining the band in 1987.

The band will be taking fans all the way back to the beginning for a journey through some of Australian rock's best legends, tales and myths.
