The best kids’ events and attractions across Melbourne’s eastern suburbs in March

There’s plenty to keep young eastern Melburnians entertained this month.

Here are some of the best family-friendly events and activities to burn up excess energy this month.

Moomba Festival

Launched in 1955, the Moomba Festival has become Melbourne’s most iconic celebration, with the Birdman Rally – where wannabe engineers test out their handmade gliders and human-powered aircraft to fly over the Yarra River – one of the main highlights.

Other key events include the parade, rides, a waterskiing competition and live music and arts performances.

When: Thursday March 5 to Monday March 9

Scoresby Steamfest 2026

The world of steam engines will come to life at the National Steam Centre over the Labour Day long weekend, as part of the Melbourne Steam Centre’s annual event.

See a range of different steam-powered engines in full operation, or jump on the miniature railway for a ride through the grounds.

When: Saturday March 7 to Monday March 9

Where: National Steam Centre, 1200 Ferntree Gully Road, Scoresby

Cost: Adults $20, children $10

Movie Night at Barngeong Reserve

Kids’ crafts and activities and roving entertainers will entertain the attendees before a screening of the live-action “How to Train Your Dragon”.

When: Friday March 13, activities from 6.30pm, movie from 8.15pm

Where: Barngeong Reserve, 50 Bambra Street, Croydon

Cost: Free

Dogs Day Out

Highlights include free kids activities, pet focused market stalls, food trucks, ice cream and coffee.

When: Sunday March 22, 10am-1pm

Where: H.E. Parker Reserve, 150 Heathmont Road, Heathmont

Tesselaar KaBloom Festival

As part of the KaBloom Festival celebrations, you can jump on a tractor ride around the Tesselaar Flower Farm or simply stroll along the large fields of multicoloured flowers.

Other attractions include regular performances from Circus Oz and kids events.

When: Every day from Saturday March 21 to Sunday April 19, 10am-5pm

Clayton Festival

Attractions include live entertainment across multiple stages, free creative arts workshops, kids' activities including face painting and circus workshops, food trucks and roving performers.

There is also free pool access at Clayton Aquatic and Health Club from 1pm to 5pm.

When: Sunday March 22, noon-5pm

Where: Clayton Community Centre, 9/15 Cooke Street, Clayton

Cost: Free

Melbourne Highland Games and Celtic Festival

You can see the best local pipers battle it out in the Victorian Highland Pipe Band Championships or, for an exhibition of pure brawn, check out the Highland Games – which includes events such as the Caber Toss, the Hammer Throw and the Stone Put.

Other attractions include folk music performers, dancing displays and a traditional Scottish clan roll call.
