The best kids’ attractions and events across Melbourne’s eastern suburbs in September

From watching RC cars tear around a race track in Boronia to a magic-themed experience for budding witches and wizards, there’s plenty to keep young eastern Melburnians entertained in September.

Between Father’s Day coming up this weekend and the Spring school holidays, there’s a treasure trove of fun activities and attractions for youngsters looking to broaden their horizon or get active.

Father’s Day barbecue - Healesville Sanctuary

Keen to grab a snag with a snake? Or a chop with a cockatoo? Then take a trip to the Healesville Sanctuary zoo this Father’s Day.

Dads, grandfathers, and father figures receive a free beer on arrival, with a barbecue buffet lunch, live music from father-daughter duo Caitie + Ko, face painting, a marshmallow roasting station and lawn games on offer throughout the day.

When: Sunday September 7 from 11am to 3pm

Where: Brolga Lawn, Healesville Sanctuary, Glen Eadie Avenue, Healesville

Cost: Non-member adults for $66 and non-member children for $35

Boronia Radio-Controlled Car Club

Have you ever been driving down Dorset Road and wondered what the mini race-track in Boronia is for? It’s the Boronia Radio-Controlled Car Club.

Spectators are welcome to stop by for race nights on Wednesdays or you can bring along your own speedy vehicle to show off your skills.

When: Wednesday nights - track opens from 5.30pm, with races from 7pm to 10.30pm

Where: Corner of Dorset Road and Park Crescent, Boronia

Cost: Race entry - members $10, non-members $15, second class entry $5

DinosRoar Experience

Are the Jurassic Park or Jurassic World movies on constant rotation at your house? Do you hear raptor noises walking down the hallway as your morning alarm?

Maybe your budding paleontologist can find a healthier outlet for their love of dinosaurs at the DinosRoar Experience hitting Carribbean Gardens these school holidays.

Events and attractions include a dino-themed maze, more than 20 life-sized dinosaurs to greet, 18 holes of family-friendly mini golf and an inflatable obstacle course.

When: Saturday September 13 and Sunday September 14; every day from Saturday September 20 to Sunday October 5; Saturday October 11 and Sunday October 12 - 10am to 3.30pm

Where: Caribbean Gardens, 850 Stud Road, Scoresby

Cost: $30 general admission, $46 VIP child - includes 30 minutes on DinoBounce, one round of nine-hole mini golf and unlimited play on the obstacle course and maze

Tesselaar Tulip Festival

It’s that time of year again, when the flowers bloom and the sound of clogs weave through the fields at the Tesselaar Flower Farm in Silvan for their annual Tulip Festival.

Events and attractions include a giant clog to jump into, a tractor ride around the site or traditional Dutch entertainment throughout the festival.

When: Every day between Saturday September 13 to Sunday October 12, 10am to 5pm

Where: Tesselaar Flower Farm, 357 Monbulk Road, Silvan

Cost: Adults $36

SkyHigh’s September Children’s Festival

Fun with a view of the city? SkyHigh is hosting a wide range of kids’ activities throughout the school holidays, including bouncy castles, treasure hunts, pony rides and circus workshops.

Events are designed for children between 5 and 12 years old only.

When: Every week day from Tuesday September 23 to Thursday October 2, events running from 11am to 4pm

Where: 26 Observatory Road, Mount Dandenong

Cost: $5 parking per car

True Fairies

True Fairies have been running a fantasy cafe and a range of different programs from the Wyreena Community Arts Centre since 2016.

These school holidays, they are running a special drop-off program for primary school aged children.

Running for six hours, the theatrical experience will include a hot pizza lunch and roaming around four acres of parkland.

Participants will learn a range of magical-themed skills, including unicorn studies, demon hunting and potions.

When: Tuesday September 23 to Thursday September 25 and Tuesday September 30 to Thursday October 2

Where: Wyreena Community Arts Centre, 13-23 Hull Road, Croydon
